It’s genesis began in 2014, when a team of future founding members of the Growing Data Foundation were successful in winning two state and one national GovHack Awards: the Unleashed Premier’s Award; Building on Science, Research & Environmental Data; and the People’s Choice Award for its What Grows Here? mobile application.

In 2016, the Growing Data Foundation founded The Things Network (TTN) Adelaide and currently facilitates the Adelaide OpenData and IoT Meetup that has over 900 subscribers.

A Growing Data Foundation team recently participated in the 2020 Australian GovHack competition. The team won the SA People’s Choice Award and received an Honourable Mention in a NSW Category, with national and international awards yet to be announced. The entry: ‘FireWater – Showing firefighters the fastest route to real-time available water’, makes use of the Adelaide The Things Network for real-time water level monitoring. The project has sparked a close collaboration with the Surveying and Spatial Science Institute (SSSI) who are hosting the ‘SSSI FireWater Map-a-thon’ on 31 October, 2020 to encourage GIS specialists worldwide to enhance the Growing Data Foundation FireWater application.

The Growing Data Foundation is currently involved in a number of other LoRaWAN related projects in partnership with other government agencies and not-for-profit organisations. These include: wetland level monitoring with the Nature Trust Glenelg and an IoT project involving a group of Riverland High Schools, sponsored by the Loxton Waikerie Council.
